Sands Family Foundation Donates $500,000 to Finger Lakes Community College

Finger Lakes Community College President Barbara Risser today announced that the Sands Family Foundation will make a $500,000 gift to the college’s capital expansion project. The funds will be matched by New York state.

Risser accepted the gift on behalf of the college, saying, “The philanthropy demonstrated by the Sands family is extraordinary, and FLCC is grateful to be a recipient on behalf of the Finger Lakes region and Canandaigua community. This gift to the college will allow us to enhance our facilities to better serve the educational needs of students from all walks of life and will also offer wonderful new resources for the community.”

The gift is dedicated to support the college’s mission to provide affordable, accessible education through an enhanced learning-centered environment. Improvements to the Canandaigua campus, slated to open by fall 2011, include the construction of a new Student Services Center and a state-of-the-art 410-seat auditorium. Existing space in the main classroom building in Canandaigua will be renovated to include 26 new classrooms and updated laboratories.

“Education is the key to achieving success in life and ensuring the vitality of the Finger Lakes region,” said Constellation Brands Chairman Richard Sands. “The Sands Family Foundation is proud to carry on Marvin Sands’ legacy in Canandaigua by investing in our community college.  We believe in the college’s mission and its role in educating people to meet the needs of the 21st century economy.”

“The college’s mission of providing affordable, accessible education for people from all economic backgrounds deserves support from the private sector,” added Rob Sands, CEO and president of Constellation Brands. “The gift from the Sands Family Foundation will generate a dollar-for-dollar match from New York state, which is a significant investment in the future well-being of our community.”
