Enrollment in FLCC's Gemini program rose 7.2 percent over last fall with more than 1,500 students at 27 participating high schools, according to a report by Fred Fink, director of concurrent enrollment.
Gemini gives eligible high school students the opportunity to take FLCC courses in their high schools during the regular school day. Ninety-six percent of students report successful transfer of credits when they later attend college.
"Gemini is a great opportunity for students to experience college courses while still in high school. Students have more confidence and feel better prepared about attending college after taking a Gemini class," notes Tracy DonVito, graduation requirements coordinator, for Wayne Central School. "In addition, earning college credits early can save students money as they pursue their college degrees."
Tracy brought a group of Gemini students to the FLCC main campus library so students could learn about finding credible sources from college librarians.
Among the students was senior Amy Blough. "I chose to take Gemini courses because I like being challenged with my coursework. In addition, I feel it looks good on your school transcript," Amy said.
FLCC's more than 60 Gemini classes are taught by about 200 high school teachers who are approved by the College. At Wayne Central, for example, students can take many different FLCC classes, including computing science, English, history, math, government and Spanish.
